Services

Dovetailing business consultancy, tax and investment structuring with longer term, strategic, family objectives - the practice offers the following services:

Strategic Advisory

Addressing the life cycle of entrepreneurial wealth creation, tax mitigation, wealth retention and succession planning, we offer a commercial/ entrepreneurial ‘solutions driven’ approach to family/ family business transition issues or projects.  We provide a  unique blend of legal, tax, investment and corporate finance expertise as a strategic overlay to enhance or support an existing team of professional advisers.  Families should undertake a complete review their affairs every 5-10 years to assess current suitability, tax efficiency, cost effectiveness and longer term resilience to changing circumstances/ risk.

Family Business and Estate Planning

Assisting with long range strategic planning for families in business – structuring liquid portfolio and business assets as part of a bespoke governance or tax planning strategy (high level tax mitigation, emigration/ immigration planning, incentive structuring for key management, building appropriate structures onshore or offshore to facilitate handing over of responsibilities to younger family members, professional managers, new trustees or ‘family office’ representatives).   Advice is deliberately intended to be strategic rather than definitive – the service model is intended to complement rather than compete with clients’ own legal, tax and accountancy advisers.

Family Office and Investment Portfolio Structuring

Developing holistic, strategic plans for the structuring of liquid/ financial wealth within appropriate portfolio ‘wrappers’ or onshore/ offshore investment vehicles, appropriately tailored to the unique short, medium and long term needs of a family.  Three years as head of Goldman Sachs’ London based Strategic Wealth Advisory Service has provided a deep knowledge of some of the world’s most complex financial structures.  Advice is intended to address broad tax efficiency, suitability, appropriateness and cost and risk factors from a commercial ‘trusted advisor’ perspective rather than as investment adviser (we are not providing investment advice or investment management services and are not regulated by the Financial Services Authority).

Personal Advisory and Support

Assisting with the following diverse issues:
  • family/ family office ‘trouble shooting’ and advisory team support
  • specific project management/ project implementation
  • trustee or director roles in appropriate, longer term, relationships
  • introducing leading third party advisers (law firms, accountants, corporate financiers, investment managers, offshore service providers and other leading international specialists) to best secure client objectives (whether at the ‘Rolls Royce’ or VW Golf segment of the market).
These are essentially ‘trusted adviser’ services where our contacts and know-how can be invaluable.  Many families require support to develop the right strategy.  Even where families/ entrepreneurs have a clear vision of what they wish to achieve, they are often disappointed with service provided by advisers or realise that an existing team is not working as efficiently as required to create synergies or deliver best results. Entrenched advisers may be overly specialised or lack the broader vision needed to lead on strategic projects/ reviews.

Our practice centres around the following (often interwoven) services:

- Strategic advisory

An entrepreneurial approach to servicing the specific ‘project’ requirements of wealthy entrepreneurs – we provide a  blend of legal, tax, investment and corporate finance expertise as an ‘overlay’ to support the existing team of professional advisers.

- Family Business and Estate Planning

Assisting with long range strategic planning for families in business – reviewing the long range family and business objectives and assisting with the development of bespoke business plans for the family (in terms of long term tax mitigation, emigration strategies, incentives for management or building appropriate platforms to facilitate the handing over of responsibilities to younger family members or professional managers, new trustees or ‘family office’ representatives.

-  Investment Structuring

Developing holistic, strategic plans for the structuring of liquid wealth within appropriate portfolio or investment vehicles (whether UK or offshore) tailored to the 2 year, 5 year and 15 year needs of the family – these discussions blend various commercial factors, tax risks, likely cost and control implications of a strategy with pure tax efficiency.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->-          <!--[endif]-->specific project management/ project implementation

<!--[if !supportLists]-->-          <!--[endif]-->introductions to third party advisers (law firms, accountants, corporate financiers, investment managers, offshore service providers and other leading international specialists) to achieve optimum client objectives, whether this involves identifying the ‘Rolls Royce’ service or a focus on reducing costs but without compromising service or quality.

These are essentially ‘trusted adviser’ services where Ian Cain’s contacts and broad know how can be tapped, in some cases in the context of non-executive director or trustee roles.  Even where entrepreneurs or families have a clear vision of what they wish to achieve, they are sometimes disappointed with the services provided by existing advisers or realise that an existing team does not offer the full range of expertise needed to achieve the objectives on time, on budget or at all ...
